EDMUND & ANN’S SON JOHN TREE 12

JOHN HARMAN BORN IN 1563 IN THE REIGN OF QUEEN ELIZABETH THE 1st WAS TO BE THE NEXT IN MY LINE OF DESCENT .IN 1586 EDMUND AND ANN'S ELDEST SON JOHN HARMAN MARRIED MILDRED PAYNE DAUGHTER OF EDWARD & Katherine (NEE LASCO) PAYNE ON THE 25th NOVEMBER 1586 AT EAST-GRINSTEAD. THEY HAD TEN CHILDREN. , EIGHT BOY'S AND TWO GIRL'S.

JOHN HARMAN FOLLOWED IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF IS GRANDFATHER RICHARD HARMAN AS A MERCER. THIS @ MERCER COOKS CROFT & CROOKES MEAD EAST GRINSTEAD.

BUT LIKE HIS GRANDFATHER RICHARD AND HIS FATHER EDMUND. JOHN HARMAN WAS NOT A POOR MAN, FOR IT DID TAKE MONEY TO BE A MERCER DEALING IN CLOTH, AND EXPENSIVE MATERIALS. LIKE HIS GRANDFATHER RICHARD, JOHN ALSO WOULD TRAVEL TO DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE COUNTRY.

THE FIRST AND ELDEST BOY OF JOHN & MILDRED'S MARRIAGE WAS EDWARD BORN IN 1587,FOLLOWED BY WILLIAM 1588 , J0HN 1589, MARIE 1591, DREW 1593, AND THEN EDMUND 1595 ,WHO WAS NAMED AFTER HIS GRANDFATHER.

THIS WAS TO BE FOLLOWED BY GEORGE 1600 MY NEXT IN LINE OF DESCENT, AND THEN THOMAS 1603, JOANNE 1605, AND LASTLY JAMES 1608.

IT IS INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT CHILDREN'S CHRISTIAN NAMES WERE EITHER NAMED AFTER GRAND PARENTS, PARENTS, OR THE BROTHER AND SISTERS OF THE PARENTS.

JOHN & MILDRED SON THOMAS WAS BORN IN NOVEMBER 1603 AT THE BEGINNING OF THAT YEAR QUEEN ELIZABETH THE 1st DIED ON THE 24TH MARCH 1603 AGE 70, THE LAST OF THE TUDORS AND THE GREATEST OF QUEENS, WHO HAD RULED ENGLAND FOR 44 YEARS.

WHEN JOHN HARMAN HAD MARRIED MILDRED PAYNE AND HE ALSO WAS A MERCER LIKE HIS GRANDFATHER RICHARD. IN ALL PROBABILITY HE HAD LEARNT THE TRADE AFTER THE DEATH OF HIS GRANDFATHER RICHARD AND WITH THE HELP OF. HIS GRAND MOTHER. CLEMENCIA

WHO WE KNOW WAS STILL. AT MIDDLE ROW AFTER THE DEATH OF HER HUSBAND RICHARD.PROBABLY RUNNING THE BUSINESS, WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF HER SON RICHARD AND HER GRANDSON JOHN.

.JOHN'S MOTHER ANN HARMAN WIFE OF HIS FATHER EDMUND HARMAN DIED IN 1593 AGED ABOUT 58, AND WAS BURIED AT EAST GRINSTEAD ON THE 27th FEBRUARY 1593.LEAVING HER HUSBAND EDMUND A WIDOWER.

UP TO THE TIME OF HER DEATH ANN & HER HUSBAND EDMUND HAD FIVE GRAND CHILDREN FROM THE MARRIAGE OF THEIR SON JOHN TO MILDRED (NEE PAYNE)

IN FACT PRIOR TO ANN'S DEATH IN FEBRUARY THE FIFTH CHILD OF JOHN AND MILDRED WAS BORN. THIS BEING DREW. THIS CHILD WAS ONLY TO LIVE A SHORT SPAN OF LIFE AND DIED IN 1595 BEFORE HE WAS TWO YEAR'S OLD.

THIS WAS TO BE FOLLOWED BY THE LOSS OF ANOTHER OF THEIR SONS WHO WAS OLDER THAN DREW, THIS BEING JOHN AGED 25 NAMED AFTER HIS FATHER.

JOHN & MILDRED SON JOHN WHO DIED HAD BEEN APPRENTICED AS TAILOR IN LEWES.

IN ALL PROBABILITY IT WAS HIS FATHER JOHN WHO WE KNOW WAS A MERCER AND DEALING IN CLOTH WOULD HAVE IN HIS TRAVELS, HAD DEALING'S WITH TAILOR'S. THERE-FORE HAD OBTAINED A POSITION FOR HIM TO BE APPRENTICED AS A TAILOR WITH SOME ONE THAT HIS FATHER JOHN WAS WELL ACQUAINTED WITH IN THE TOWN OF LEWES.

HIS SON JOHN COMPLETED HIS APPRENTICE-SHIP AND WAS ADVERTISING IN LEWES'S KELLY'S DIRECTORIES IN 1610 AT THE AGE OF 21. HE WAS TO CONTINUE IN THIS TRADE FOR ANOTHER FOUR YEARS, AND THEN AT THE AGE OF 25 JOHN DIED IN 1614. JOHN HAD NEVER MARRIED.

IN THE YEAR 1622 JOHN AND MILDRED ALSO LOST THEIR SON EDMUND, ALSO NAMED AFTER HIS GRANDDAD. THIS SON WAS ONLY 26 YEARS OLD AND A YOUNG MAN WHEN HE DIED. EDMUND WAS BURIED 6 APR 1622

TWO SONS DIED YOUNG MEN JUST STARTING OUT ON LIFE. EDMUND, AT 26 AND JOHN AT 25. WHAT AN AGE TO LOSE YOUR CHILDREN WHO GROWN TO BE YOUNG MEN.

EDMUND & ANN'S SON & JOHN'S BROTHER RICHARD NAMED AFTER HIS GRAND FATHER DIED THE YEAR AFTER IN 1615.RICHARD WAS AGED 41, AND WAS BURIED ON THE 17th OCTOBER 1615.

THIS FOLLOWING ON THE LOSS OF THEIR SONS MUST HAVE BEEN A SAD BLOW TO JOHN & MILDRED.

BUT LIKE ALL THING'S SOME SURVIVED AS CAN BE SEEN BY EDMUND HIMSELF, WHO LIVED TO THE RIPE OLD AGE OF APPROXIMATELY 77.
