ROBERT & JUDITH'S SON JOHN TREE 9

JOHN HARMAN MY NEXT IN LINE OF DESCENDANT'S MARRIED ANN WHO WAS BORN IN HOLBORN LONDON. THIS ON THE 4th OF JUNE 1678 IN THE PARISH OF CAPEL IN SURREY.

UNFORTUNATELY WE DO NOT KNOW ANN'S SURNAME. BUT WE DO KNOW THROUGH PARISH RECORD'S OF CHRISTENINGS FOR JOHN & ANN HARMAN AT EAST GRINSTEAD .ONE YEAR AFTER JOHN & ANN'S MARRIAGE TRAGEDY STRUCK WITH THE DEATH OF JOHN'S FATHER, ROBERT HARMAN.

JOHN'S GRAND FATHER GEORGE WAS STILL ALIVE AND PROBABLY LIVED WITH JOHN & ANN. AS WELL AS HIS WIDOWED MOTHER JUDITH.JOHN HARMAN ALONE MUST HAVE BEEN THE BREADWINNER FOR THE FAMILY.

JOHN & ANN'S FIRST CHILD WAS A GIRL CHRISTENED KATHERINE.

JOHN HAD LOST A SISTER BY 'THIS. NAME AND IT WAS PROBABLY FOR THIS REASON HE NAMED HIS FIRST-BORN GIRL AFTER HIS BABY SISTER. WHO DIED WHEN HE WAS JUST FOUR. YEAR'S OLD. IF HE DID HER DEATH MUST HAVE MADE AN IMPACT ON HIM.

BUT AS CAN BE SEEN BY THE FAMILY TREE'S THE VARIOUS FAMILY'S USED TIME AND TIME AGAIN THEIR FOREFATHER'S AND FAMILY CHRISTIAN NAME'S. ESPECIALLY IN RELATION TO THE MALE SIDE OF THE FAMILY. THIS TREND CONTINUING UP TO THE THIRTY'S, AND IN SOME FAMILY'S CONTINUE' TO THE PRESENT DAY.

KATHERINE WAS BAPTISED ON 6th OF APRIL 1681 FOLLOWED BY A SON NAMED AGAIN AFTER HIS GREAT GRAND FATHER, AND FATHER, JOHN HARMAN. JOHN WAS BAPTISED ON THE 14th APRIL IN THE YEAR 1683 AT EAST GRINSTEAD.

JOHN & ANN THEN HAD ANOTHER GIRL, THAT WAS NAMED ANN AFTER HER MOTHER. THIS ANN WAS BORN IN 1684, NEXT SON GEORGE .IN 1687, AND THIS WAS TO BE MY NEXT DESCENDANT.

FOLLOWED BY JANE IN 1689,THEN MARIE 1693, AND LASTLY THOMAS IN 1696.S0 THE FAMILY GREW WITH JOHN & ANN HAVING SEVEN CHILDREN.

AFTER JOHN & ANN'S CHILD ANN WAS BORN IN 1684 'THE FOLLOWING YEAR ON FEBRUARY 6th 1685 CHARLES THE 2ND DIED AGED OF ,AND WAS BURIED AT WESTMINSTER ABBEY. CHARLES THE 2ND HAD CHARM AND A VAST SENSE OF HUMOUR THAT CAUSED HIM TO BE MUCH LOVED BY ORDINARY PEOPLE.

CHARLES THE 2ND REFUSED TO DIVORCE HIS QUEEN CATHERINE WHEN .SHE WAS UNABLE TO' PROVIDE A HEIR TO THE THRONE. HE WAS HOWEVER A GREAT WOMANISER, WITH A GREAT SEXUAL APPETITE.

NELL GWYNNE THE ORANGE SELLER WHO BECAME A LEADING ACTRESS 'AT' DRURY LANE IS 'THE BEST REMEMBERED AS ONE OF HIS MISTRESS'S, AND THERE WERE NUMEROUS OTHERS.

JAMES 2ND BROTHER OF CHARLES THE 2ND THEN ASSUMED THE THRONE OF ENGLAND, THOUGH SECRETLY HE WAS A CONVERTED AND STAUNCH ROMAN CATHOLIC. HIS DAUGHTER PRINCESS MARY WAS MARRIED TO WILLIAM OF ORANGE FOR POLITICAL REASONS. . THIS BEING TO FORGE A LINK WITH HOLLAND AGAINST THE FRENCH.

JAMES 2ND AS A BOY HAD BEEN CAPTURED BY THE PARLIAMENTARY FORCES DURING THE CIVIL WAR, AND IMPRISONED. HE ESCAPED DRESSED AS A GIRL TO HIS SISTER PRINCESS MARY IN HOLLAND. IN THE 11 YEARS OF THE REIGN BY THE PURITANS HE FOUGHT IN MANY BATTLES IN OTHER COUNTRIES. SHOWING SKILL AND BRAVERY IN THESE BATTLES.

WHEN HIS BROTHER CHARLES THE 2nd CAME TO THE THRONE JAMES RETURNED TO ENGLAND AND HE THEN MARRIED ANN HYDE THE DAUGHTER OF THE DUKE OF CLAREDON. FROM THIS MARRIAGE HIS DAUGHTER PRINCESS MARY WAS BORN WHO MARRIED TO WILLIAM OF ORANGE. WHEN ANN HIS WIFE DIED HE MARRIED A YOUNG GIRL MARY OF MODENA.

HISTORY SHOULD HAVE WARNED HIM OF ENGLISH AND ALSO THE SCOTS AVERSION TO THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH., AND HATE FOR POPERY DOMINATION..

JAMES 2ND YOUNG WIFE HE' HAD MARRIED" MARY OF' MODENA WAS A STAUNCH CATHOLIC. AS A CATHOLIC SHE WAS NOT WELCOMED AS THE QUEEN OF 'ENGLAND BY MANY OF THE ORDINARY PEOPLE. THERE WERE EVEN POSTERS PRINTED SHOWING HER CONFESSING TO A WOLF. SHE GAVE BIRTH TO A SON, AND THEN IT WAS FELT THAT BRITAIN WAS HEADING INTO A ROMAN CATHOLIC DYNASTY.

THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY AND HIS SIX BISHOPS APPROACHED WILLIAM & MARY OF ORANGE WITH THEIR FEARS OF ENGLAND BECOMING A ROMAN CATHOLIC KINGDOM. WILLIAM OF ORANGE WAS A PROTESTANT, AND SO WAS HIS WIFE MARY THE DAUGHTER OF JAMES 2ND.

THE PRINCESS MARY WAS ALSO THE HEIR APPARENT TO THE THRONE, BEING THE DAUGHTER OF JAMES 2nd FIRST MARRIAGE. BECAUSE FRANCE WAS ALSO A CATHOLIC COUNTRY WILLIAM OF ORANGE COULD SEE THAT IF ENGLAND AS A CATHOLIC COUNTRY, AND ALLIED ITSELF TO FRANCE. EUROPE WOULD EVENTUALLY FALL UNDER THE DOMINATION OF THE POPE, AND THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH.

WILLIAM OF ORANGE LANDED IN THE SOUTH WEST OF ENGLAND WITH HIS ARMY. IT THEN BECAME APPARENT HOW DISSATISFIED HAD PUBLIC OPINION BECOME WITH JAMES 2ND. BY THE CLUMSY AND ARBITRARY WAYS, THAT NEITHER. THE ARMY ,OR THE NAVY WOULD FIGHT FOR HIM.

JAMES THE 2ND LOST HIS NERVE AND EVENTUALLY FLED LONDON, BUT HE WAS CAUGHT TRYING TO BOARD A SHIP, AND BROUGHT BACK. BUT WILLIAM OF ORANGE ALLOWED HIS FATHER IN LAW HIS FREEDOM AND HE FLED TO FRANCE AND ARRIVED ON XMAS DAY 1659.

JAMES 2ND THEN AMASSED A CATHOLIC ARMY IN IRELAND 'BUT LOST TO WILLIAM OF ORANGE AT THE BATTLE OF THE BOYNE ON JULY 1st 1690.

JAMES 2nd SPENT THE REST OF HIS LIFE IN COMFORT IN ST; GERMAINE. HE HAD SHOWN HIMSELF TO BE IMPATIENT, ARROGANT, AND A SILLY MAN WHO TOOK NO NOTICE OF PASSED HISTORY WHEN THE ROUNDHEADS PUT HIS FATHER. CHARLES THE 1st TO DEATH.

BUT FOR ALL THAT THERE IS NO DOUBT ABOUT IT THAT JAMES 2ND WAS A TOLERANT MAN TOWARDS ALL RELIGIOUS FAITHS.

SO FOR RELIGIOUS FAITH WILLIAM & MARY OF ORANGE WERE INVITED BY PARLIAMENT TO BECOME KING & QUEEN ENGLAND & SCOTLAND AND IN FEBRUARY 1699.

IT IS FROM THIS BATTLE OF THE BOYNE IN 1690 THAT THE IRISH PROTESTANT ORANGE MEN WAS FORMED BY THOSE WHO SUPPORTED WILLIAM & MARY OF ORANGE.

IRELAND TODAY STILL FIGHT BETWEEN THE PROTESTANTS AND CATHOLICS. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE ORANGE MEN PARADE THROUGH THE CATHOLIC AREAS. OF BELFAST. HOW PATHETIC THAT MEN STILL KILL AND MAIM, ON A EVENT THAT HAPPENED SO LONG AGO, AND SO MUCH FOR BOTH CATHOLIC, AND PROTESTANT RELIGION'S.

IT WOULD APPEAR THAT AFTER THE DEATH OF HIS FATHER ROBERT, HIS SON JOHN HARMAN & WIFE ANN TOOK OVER THE RUNNING OF THE FARM. WITH HIS GRANDFATHER GEORGE HARMAN, AND HIS MOTHER JUDITH LIVING WITH JOHN & ANN.

JOHN'S GRANDFATHER GEORGE HARMAN IN HIS LIFE TIME, HE HAD SEEN AND BEEN SUBJECT TO THE HARD VIGOUR'S OF LIFE. HE HAD BEEN MARRIED TO ELIZABETH FOR THIRTY-FOUR YEARS.

BETWEEN. THEM THEY HAD BROUGHT INTO THE WORLD SEVEN CHILDREN. DURING THEIR MARRIAGE TOGETHER.

THEY LOST CHILDREN & GRAND CHILDREN. WE KNOW THAT THEY LOST TWO CHILDREN. DREWE AT THE AGE. OF ONE, AND EDWARD AT THE AGE OF 4.

GEORGE HARMAN LOST HIS WIFE ELIZABETH AND LIVED ANOTHER 20 YEARS AFTER HER DEATH. BUT LIFE HAD STILL GIVEN HIM. NO RESPITE FROM THE INSUFFERABLE LIVING CONDITIONS, OF THOSE DAYS.

LASTLY PRIOR TO HIS DEATH HE.: HAD TO SUFFER THE LOSS OF HIS SON ROBERT, AND HIS TWO GRAND DAUGHTERS MARY AT THE AGE OF 20, AND KATHERINE AS A BABY.

GEORGE HARMAN WAS ALSO THE LAST SURVIVING SON OF JOHN & MILDRED HARMAN, AS ALL HIS BROTHERS DIED OVER THE YEARS BEFORE HIM.

WE ALSO KNOW THAT OF GEORGE & ELIZABETH FAMILY ONLY TWO BOYS ROBERT & GEORGE SURVIVED TO MARRY. BUT OF THE GIRLS ANN, JOAN, & MARGARET THERE IS NO FURTHER INFORMATION.

GEORGE. HARMAN WAS BURIED WITH ELIZABETH ON THE 5th JUNE 1690 AT EAST GRINSTEAD AT THE GRAND AGE OF NINETY.

BUT LIFE WENT ON FOR ORDINARY FOLK , FOR WIDOW JUDITH HARMAN, HER SON JOHN HARMAN & WIFE ANN. THEIR OLDER CHILDREN HAD PASSED THE. BABY STAGE.

WHEN THEY HAD ANOTHER. CHILD. MARIE THIS CHILD BORN IN THE DECEMBER OF THAT YEAR 1693 AND CHRISTENED ON THE 2nd. SHE DIED SOON AFTER BIRTH AND WAS BURIED EIGHT DAYS AFTER ON THE 10th DECEMBER 1693. THEN THE YOUNGEST SON OF THE FAMILY THOMAS WAS BORN THREE YEAR'S AFTER

THOMAS WAS BAPTISED ON THE 29th JANUARY IN 1696 BUT AT THE AGE OF 11 MONTHS OLD WHEN HE ALSO DIED AND WAS BURIED ON THE 9th DECEMBER 1697 BOTH, CHILDREN LOST IN THE DEPTH OF WINTER, AND AROUND CHRISTMAS TIME.

GRANDMOTHER JUDITH HARMAN WAS STILL ALIVE WHEN THESE TWO GRAND CHILDREN DIED, AND. IT MUST HAVE BEEN AS HEART BREAKING FOR JUDITH AS IT WAS FOR HER SON JOHN AND HIS WIFE ANN.

JUDITH YOUNGEST DAUGHTER DOROTHY OF MARRIED ON 4th APRIL OF 1696 TO ANTHONY ELLIS AT EAST GRINSTEAD. THIS COUPLE OF MONTH'S AFTER THE BIRTH OF JOHN & ANN'S CHILD THOMAS HER NEPHEW IN THE JANUARY.

WAS THIS ONCE AGAIN ONE OF THE DREADED DISEASE'S THAT AFFLICTED FAMILIES AT THIS TIME IN THE PAST. HOW LUCKY WE ARE TO BE IN AN AGE WHERE SMALLPOX, DIPHTHERIA ,CHOLERA, AND OTHER DISEASE'S OF THAT AGE HAVE BEEN CONQUERED.

SO JOHN'S AND WIFE ANNE WAS LEFT WITH FIVE CHILDREN .KATHERINE AGED 16, JOHN AGED 14, ANNE AGED 13, GEORGE AGED 10 JANE AGED 8.

JOHN HARMAN'S MOTHER JUDITH HARMAN WIFE OF ROBERT HARMAN LIVED HER SON JOHN & DAUGHTER IN-LAW ANNE AFTER THE DEATH OF HER HUSBAND ROBERT. FOR TWENTY-NINE YEARS .

JUDITH HARMAN DIED AT THE AGE OF APPROXIMATELY OF EIGHTY-TWO ,AND WAS BURIED AT EAST GRINSTEAD ON THE 12th OF MARCH 1704 AGAIN LIKE HER HUSBAND ROBERT SHE WAS BURIED IN A PAUPERS GRAVE.

IT WAS HARD TIMES FOR THE FAMILY. BUT FATE HAD NOT FINISHED WITH THE FAMILY FOR WAS TO LOSE ANOTHER CHILD OF JOHN'S ANN HARMAN'S MARRIAGE. THIS WAS TO BE THEIR DAUGHTER JANE LIKE MANY OF THE DAUGHTERS OF THE FAMILIES JANE EVENTUALLY WENT INTO SERVICE.

IT IS HIGHLY LIKELY THAT JANE NEEDED TO GO WORK AT AN EARLY AGE POSSIBLY AT THE TENDER AGE OF 12 OR 13 YEARS. THIS ASSISTING IN THE SUPPORT OF THE FAMILY, THIS SHE DID AS MAID IN ONE OF THE HOUSE'S IN THE AREA. LIFE WOULD HAVE BEEN A LIFE OF DRUDGERY, HARD, AND HARSH .FOR JANE IN HER POSITION AS A MAID. JANE BECAME STRICKEN WITH DISEASE; AND AS A YOUNG WOMEN DIED AT THE AGE OF SIXTEEN.

JANE WAS BURIED AND AS DESCRIBED IN THE PARISH RECORDS AT EAST GRINSTEAD AS A POOR MAID ON THE .24th MARCH 1708.

I WONDER WHAT SORT OF LIFE OF POVERTY POOR JANE HARMAN HAD. FINALLY TO FINISH IN A PAUPERS GRAVE.

IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THESE THREE GENERATIONS OF FAMILIES WENT THROUGH A PERIOD OF INTENSE HARDSHIP, AND SORROW.

OUT OF THE SEVEN CHILDREN JOHN & ANN ONLY ONE SURVIVED TO MARR Y AND THAT WAS MY NEXT IN LINE GEORGE , IT IS POSSIBLE THAT ANNE NAMED AFTER HER MOTHER ALSO SURVIVED AS THERE ARE NO RECORDS OF HER DEATH. LIKE MANY YOUNG GIRL SHE WAS PROBABLY IN SERVICE IN ANOTHER PARISH.

WHEN ANN HARMAN DIED HER BURIAL WAS EITHER NOT ENTERED IN THE PARISH RECORDS OR DESTROYED THROUGH TIME.
