EDWARD AND ELIZABETH  SON WALTER JOHN TREE 8/2C1

THE HARMAN'S OF HIGHGATE

THE HARMAN'S OF HIGHGATE WERE STRICT BAPTISTS WALTER JOHN HARMAN, BORN IN 1829 EAST OF THE CITY, WAS ONLY EIGHT WHEN HIS MOTHER DIED AND HE AND ALL HIS YOUNGER BROTHERS AND SISTERS WERE HANDED OVER TO THE CARE OF THEIR OLD FAMILY NURSE. A BAPTIST HERSELF OF THE STRICT VARIETY.

THIS NURSE PROMPTLY CONVERTED HER CHARGES FROM THE CONVENTIONAL ANGLICANISM OF THEIR DEAD MOTHER TO HER OWN ECLECTIC CREED.

BAPTISTS IN GENERAL WERE NOT THE MOST RELAXED OF NONCONFORMISTS AND THE STRICT SECT OUTSHONE ALL OTHERS IN THE RIGOURS OF THEIR ETHIC.

THEY WERE CALVINISTS BELIEVING IN PREDESTINED SALVATION BY FAITH.

THEY EXPRESSED THAT FAITH BY TOTAL IMMERSION IN ADULT BAPTISM; AND THEY SPREAD THAT FAITH BY EXCEPTIONAL EMPHASIS ON MISSIONS. ALL THESE THINGS WERE TO AFFECT EDWARD ‘S FAMILY.

WALTER JOHN'S TEMPERAMENT LEAPT TO MEET THIS IMPORTED PURITANISM. THE INHERENT SELF-RELIANCE THAT THE NEW CREED ENCOURAGED WAS FURTHER DEVELOPED BY THE DEATH OF HIS FATHER .EDWARD.

AT ONLY SEVENTEEN HE REGISTERED HIS FATHER'S DEATH FROM 'DISEASE OF THE LUNGS' AT HIS HOME, 23 LUCAS STREET (NOW LUKIN STREET), STEPNEY, MADE ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE EDUCATION OF HIS TWO BROTHERS AND GENERALLY BECAME A YOUTHFUL BUT AUTHORITARIAN HEAD OF THE FAMILY.

NATHANIEL BISHOP WHO MARRIED KATHERINE CHAMBERLAIN 1905

FOR MANY YEARS IT WAS A HARD STRUGGLE AND AT FIRST FOR WALTER JOHN.

HIS WAY OF LIFE HAD TO BE EXTREMELY MODEST COMPARED WITH HIS PARENTS'. HIS FATHER EDWARD HARMAN HAD BEEN A BANKER AND WAS REGISTERED AT DEATH AS 'QUALITY :GENTLEMAN'.

DESPITE THE BLEAK OUTLOOK WALTER HARMAN RESOLVED TO WORK HIS WAY BACK TO PROSPERITY EQUAL TO HIS FATHER'S.

HE WAS SOON RUNNING THE BUSINESS FOR A MAJOR LAMBERT, SILVERSMITH AND JEWELLER OF COVENTRY STREET, PICCADILLY.

THOUGH WALTER WAS NEVER OFFERED A PARTNERSHIP, HE DEVELOPED A KEEN EYE FOR ANTIQUE SILVER AND A CHARM THAT MADE HIM A GOOD SALESMAN.

THE CHARM, HOWEVER, WAS LEFT BEHIND AT WORK INSTEAD OF BEING BROUGHT HOME TO HIS FAMILY, WHO SAW THE DARK SIDE OF HIS CALVINISM.

AFTER LIVING IN VARIOUS PLACES INCLUDING VICARS ROAD, KENTISH TOWN, WHERE NATHANIEL BISHOP WAS BORN, WALTER'S FAMILY WERE FINALLY ENSCONCED IN A FINE NEW HOUSE BUILT TO HIS REQUIREMENTS AT 5 DARTMOUTH PARK ROAD ON HIGHGATE HILL.

WALTER JOHN  NAMED IT BALCOMBE HOUSE AFTER HIS MOTHER, THE 'BELLE OF BALCOMBE' IN SUSSEX.

IT HAD A LONG GARDEN, A DINING-, DRAWING- AND MORNING-ROOM, SEVEN BEDROOMS AND ONE OF THE FIRST BATHROOMS IN THE DISTRICT WITH H AND C AND A FLUSH LAVATORY.

WALTER JOHN HE SAVED ENOUGH TO BUY HOUSE PROPERTY IN NORTH LONDON. EVERY SATURDAY MORNING HE WOULD INSPECT IT AND COLLECT THE RENTS.

LONG AFTER WALTER JOHN ‘S DEATH SOME OF THOSE SAME TENANTS, SILENT AND UNEXPLAINED PEOPLE, BRINGING THEIR RENTS TO HARLEY STREET.

WALTER JOHN  HARMAN WAS IMMENSELY PROUD OF ALL HIS POSSESSIONS: HOUSE, WIFE, CHILDREN AND RELIGIOUS FAITH.

THE HOUSE STILL STANDS, DIVIDED INTO FLATS; THE RELIGION WAS CARRIED ON BY ONLY ONE OF HIS SEVEN SURVIVING CHILDREN.

SO PROUD WAS HE OF THE HARMAN'S OF HIGHGATE THAT HE MANAGED TO TRACE THEM BACK TO A CLERK OF THE CROWN IN THE REIGN OF HENRY VII.

HIS SON NATHANIEL  EMULATING HIM, CLAIMED A CERTAIN EDWARD HARMAN, BARBER-SURGEON (DOCTOR) TO HENRY VI II, AS AN ANCESTOR.

GENERATION AFTER GENERATION OF SUSSEX YEOMEN ALL BURIED IN EAST GRINSTEAD CHURCHYARD.

A FEW PERSONAL IMPRESSIONS OF WALTER JOHN REMAIN: OF A VICTORIAN PAPA WHOSE FAMILY FELL INTO IMMEDIATE SILENCE WHEN HE BEGAN TO SPEAK AND DID.

WALTER JOHN WAS A TYRANT AND WHEN HIS DAUGHTER GERTRUDE SAID SHE WAS AFRAID OF GHOSTS HE DRAGGED HER TO HIGHGATE CEMETERY . HIS DAUGHTER GERTRUDE HATED HER FATHER.

HE ALSO DROVE AWAY AT THE AGE OF 15. HIS TALENTED SON SIDNEY.

AS HE GREW OLDER HE LOOKED LIKE A PATRIARCH WITH GLITTERING EYES, AND A FLOWING WHITE BEARD.

ONE DAY HE RAN DOWN HIGHGATE HILL TO CATCH THE BUS AND DIED OF HEART FAILURE IN 1901,AND  WAS BURIED AT HIGHGATE CEMETERY.

WALTER JOHN MADE HIS OWN WILL TO SAVE MONEY. THIS CAUSING PROBLEMS TO THE FAMILY.

HIS WIFE HANNAH WAS LEFT 700 A YEAR..

WALTER JOHN'S WIDOW, HANNAH BELLAMY, , LIVED ON UNTIL 1912. TALL AND OF A FLORID BEAUTY, SHE WAS DESCENDED FROM A LONG LINE OF ROPE-MAKERS, FIRST IN BRISTOL (I68O'S) AND THEN LONDON, WHERE HER FATHER AND GRANDFATHER OWNED A ROPE-WALK IN SOUTHWARK.
